About Tomatis® listening training
Tomatis® listening training is a sensorineural auditory stimulation method. It trains the brain via the ear, with the help of music. Experience greater focus, better communication and a new sense of balance and wellbeing.
Who was Alfred Tomatis and what were his discoveries?
For detailed information please check: www.tomatis.com
French ENT Dr. Alfred Tomatis founded a pedagogy of listening. He developed a way to retrain the ear and to change the patterns of hearing with the help of a device called the "electronic ear". Transmitting music via both air and bone conduction, the specially designed headset delivers sudden changes of frequency filter that challenge habitual listening habits. The training consists of different listening blocks of approximately 14 days per block. The first block is a passive phase where the client listens to filtered music via the headset. With the guidance of the practitioner an active phase can be later introduced, with the clients own voice as the sound source. Both phases have a lasting influence on the brain's ability to differentiate aurally. The parasympathetic nervous system is also engaged during the listening, influencing primary functions including diaphragmatic breathing and relaxed digestion, emotional balance and overall wellbeing.
The ear has several functions:
1. to hear
2. to control the balance
3. to stimulate the brain and to support it with energy
These components have a deep influence on our vocal abilities, our psychological wellbeing and our physical self-awareness.
Dr. Alfred Tomatis developed three laws:
1. The voice contains only what the ear hears.
2. If one gives the imperfect ear the chance of hearing correctly, the voice instantly and unconsciously improves.
3. It is possible to transform the voice through auditive stimulation over a certain period of time. The Electronic Ear provides this simulation.
Florian finds the method very beneficial for:
1. Vocal develpoment (vocal quality, timbre, volume, intonation, colours, etc.)
3. Self confidence and better performance
4. Better self-awareness (what do I really want?)
5. Mental stability
7. Personal artistry
8. Improvements in coordination and physical fine tuning through stimulating
the vestibular organ
9. Discovering unexpected strengths and gifts
10. Developing more joy in life

Listening vs Hearing
One of the most important insights concerning the processing of sound in our brain is that hearing and listening are not necessarily the same thing. Hearing has passive implications, whereas listening has an active attitude. We notice it in our everyday lives when we are able to listen to something specific in a noisy environment. For example when we listen to just one friend in a crowded coffee shop. As we pay attention to what he says, we don't notice the other sounds around us, unless we want to focus on them. This works like an "audio zoom". With Tomatis® listening training we retrain our brain to pick the information up we want to hear and to block the information we don't want to pay attention to. Therefore we also retrain a certain protective function of the listening again. This helps us to stay calm even though annoying and distressing sounds (like traffic noise, sirens, distracting talk, construction noise, our neighbour's TV...) appear around us.
How does it work?

Interview and assessment: At your initial consultation session, Florian can assess your dominant mode of listening and define customized goals with you. He will answer further questions you may have, and discuss whether Tomatis@ training makes sense for you. Please note that Tomatis® training cannot reverse permanent hearing damage or deafness. It is necessary for clients to experience a base level of auditory signal for Tomatis® to then train the brain's ability in focussed listening and auditory attention.
Training consists of three 10-13 day phases. Each phase involves two hours of listening to filtered music daily.
A five to nine week break between the listening blocks is recommended, as giving the brain time to integrate the new information and to change old patterns.
Where: Clients can either come to our studio to relax there during the listening blocks, or may choose to take a portable trainings device TalksUp® home.
Depending on your progress and your goals there are also active voice use exercises available. Florian can teach you those exercises and link them to the listening programs.
The filtered music you will be hearing is mostly by Mozart. Gregorian chants are also part of every listening session. Most clients usually like to relax, or may feel visually creative while listening to the music, so please feel free to bring pens and paper should you wish to draw.
AURISOS founder Florian Thomas first came across the work of Dr Alfred Tomatis in a book about neuroplasticity. Dr Tomatis pioneered the use of filtered music to stimulate the ear and hearing nerve, thereby cognitive function to better differentiate sound frequencies. As a singer Florian understood immediately that Tomatis® training should be benefit musicians, and he decided to investigate further.
Having personally experienced a construction noise trauma as an infant Florian knew how it felt to have difficulties in tolerating particular high frequencies. He had noticed himself avoiding these in various types of music and instruments, certain voices and so on. His initial thought was "what if I refuse to add upper partials to my singing voice since I don't want to hear them?". Driven by that idea he decided to experience a Tomatis® listening training for himself, and found it highly beneficial. He experienced changes in the timbre of his voice, as well as an increased emotional balance under performance conditions and an over all calmness in his mood.
Florian now uses Tomatis® in his daily work as singing teacher and as soloist. He is a grade 1 practitioner which allows him to apply the method in his studio.
Florian Thomas was born in Graz/Austria and was a boy soprano soloist, singing at festivals in Austria such as „Steirischer Herbst“. Following the years of voice change Florian studied both law and French horn and began working freelance as a French horn player, teacher and as a music journalist. He then completed a master of musicology degree in which his subject of research was Schubert Lieder. Returning to pursue developments in his voice, he undertook a Masters in Lied and Oratorio at the University of Vienna. He also began studying with noted London voice coach Janice Chapman in 2012 and in the same year was selected for the Wagner International Singing Competition in Bayreuth. Florian also works with internationally highly acclaimed vocal coach Paul Farrington in London.
From 2007 to 2016 Florian was member of the Vienna State Opera Chorus, the Concert Association Vienna State Opera Chorus and the Wiener Hofmusikkapelle. In this position he sang numerous solo parts at the Vienna State Opera and at the Hofburgkapelle Wien. He also attended international tours to various countries such as the US, Japan etc.
Florian regularly sings as a soloist for masses and oratorios as well as performing Lieder and concert recitals Austria and in the UK. He recently performed the tenor solo in Richard Blackford’s cantata “Voices of exile” with the Bournemouth Symphony Chorus conducted by Gavin Carr. He sang his first "Don José" in a concert performance of Bizet's "Carmen" for the Dartington festival in August 2016 conducted by David Angus.
Florian has been teaching throughout his singing career. He had various positions at music schools in Austria. He was also lecturer on breathing techniques at several master classes. offers Tomatis® listening training in his studio in Oxford.
